Linguaskill in Malaysia, who recognises it and how it compares with MUET

What Malaysia's Ministry of Higher Education recognised in 2020, what that does and does not cover. Then how Linguaskill differs from MUET.

Quick answer

Linguaskill Malaysia recognition is real but narrow. On 20 November 2020 the Ministry of Higher Education recognised Linguaskill as a minimum English entry requirement for international students at private higher education institutions. It is not MUET. The announcement does not say anything about public universities. You can check your level first with the full Linguaskill practice test.

This page sticks to what Cambridge and the Malaysian Examinations Council (MPM) publish. Where neither says anything, we say so instead of guessing.

Is Linguaskill recognised in Malaysia

Yes, for international students applying to private higher education institutions. Cambridge English reported on 20 November 2020 that the Ministry of Higher Education in Malaysia has recognised Cambridge English Qualifications, Linguaskill and OET. Students can use them to prove their English ability against the minimum entry requirements.

The announcement has limits. It talks about private institutions and international students. It does not mention public universities or Malaysian citizens, so whether your target institution accepts Linguaskill is something to confirm with its admissions office. Each institution also sets its own level.

Linguaskill or MUET

They are two different tests with different organisers. MUET, the Malaysian University English Test, is run by the Malaysian Examinations Council. Linguaskill is a Cambridge test taken through an authorised centre.

Linguaskill MUET
Organiser Cambridge Malaysian Examinations Council
Skills Reading, listening, writing, speaking, each a separate module Listening, speaking, reading, writing
Result Score and CEFR level per module, from B1 to C2 Bands, see the council for the current scale
Dates On demand, set by the centre Fixed sessions, three in 2026
Fee Set by each centre RM150 for citizens, RM350 for non-citizens

The Linguaskill row comes from Cambridge. The MUET rows come from the council's FAQ, last updated on 15 October 2026. The 2026 timetable page lists three sessions. The FAQ does not publish the band scale, so check the council before relying on any band table you find elsewhere.

Which one do you need

The test you need is the one your institution names. The entry page of the course decides, not the test's reputation.

  1. Open the entry requirements of your course and read which English tests are listed.
  2. Check whether the page says ‘international students’ or ‘all applicants’. The 2020 recognition covers international students at private institutions.
  3. If Linguaskill is not listed, email admissions and ask in writing whether it is accepted and at what level.
  4. Ask whether the test must be taken in a given period before enrolling.

Where to take Linguaskill in Malaysia

You book through an authorised Linguaskill centre. Cambridge says you need to contact one of its authorised exam centres and gives a search tool to find them. Cambridge also describes two ways to run the test, at the centre or remotely with online supervision, so ask the centre which it offers. Our page on taking Linguaskill online at home covers the remote option.

We could not verify a current Malaysian price on an official page. Prices on older pages are dated 2021, so ask the centre for today's fee.

What the Linguaskill result looks like

Linguaskill has no pass mark. Each module gets a score and a level on the CEFR from B1 to C2. A module below B1 is not reported. B2 is 160 to 179 on the Cambridge scale. The Linguaskill results page explains how to read the certificate. The exam format page lists each module. If your institution asks for a particular level, you need to know where you stand before you book.

Getting ready

Practise on the same four parts you will sit. The full Linguaskill practice test runs reading, listening, writing and speaking with the official timings and gives an estimated score per module. It is free and needs no centre. How we built it is on about us. It does not replace MUET preparation, since the two tests have different tasks.

Is Linguaskill accepted in Malaysia?

It is recognised for one purpose we can verify. Since 20 November 2020 the Ministry of Higher Education recognises it as a minimum English entry requirement for international students at private institutions. For anything else, ask the institution (our guide on whether Linguaskill is accepted shows how).

Is Linguaskill the same as MUET?

No. MUET is run by the Malaysian Examinations Council. Linguaskill is run by Cambridge. They have different formats, results and booking routes.

Does Linguaskill replace MUET for public universities?

We could not verify that. The ministry announcement covers private institutions and international students. Public university rules need to be checked with the university.

How much does Linguaskill cost in Malaysia?

It depends on the centre. We did not find a current price on an official page, so ask an authorised centre.
