Linguaskill Reading practice: part by part and a 40-minute test

160 Linguaskill Reading questions spread over the 5 parts of the exam, from B1 to C2. Each part is done on an exam screen, with a clock and one question per screen, and at the end you see every answer with its explanation. There is also a 40-minute practice test with the whole module.

Practise Reading

Each part is practised on an exam screen, like the real one: one question per screen, with a clock, and nothing marked until the end of the part. You do not choose a level: the questions go from lowest to highest, B1 to C2, because the real exam adapts to you.

  1. Part 1. Read and select

A notice, a label or a short email and one question: you choose the sentence that means the same.

    • 6 questions
    • ≈ 5 min
  2. Part 2. Gapped sentences

A sentence with one gap: you choose the word or phrase that completes it.

    • 6 questions
    • ≈ 3 min
  3. Part 3. Multiple-choice gap-fill

A text with five gaps: you choose the right word for each gap from several options.

    • 10 questions
    • ≈ 5 min
  4. Part 4. Open gap-fill

A text with five gaps and no options: you type one word in each.

    • 10 questions
    • ≈ 7 min
  5. Part 5. Extended reading

Long texts with several questions: comprehension, the missing sentence or paragraph, and matching texts.

    • 22 questions
    • ≈ 22 min

40-minute practice test

The whole module in one go, like the exam: 44 questions from B1 to C2, with a clock and nothing marked until the end.

What Reading practice is like

  • You choose a part, not an exercise. The five parts come in exam order and each one tells you how many questions it has and how long it usually takes.
  • It works like the exam. One question per screen, with the clock running and the Previous and Next buttons. Nothing is marked until the end of the part.
  • You do not choose the level. The questions in each part go from lowest to highest level, B1 to C2, to imitate the real exam adapting to you. If you repeat a part, different questions come up.
  • Gaps without options are typed in. As in the exam, you have to produce the word, not recognise it from a list.
  • At the end of the part you see your score, every answer with its explanation and a conclusion, and you move on to the next part.

The parts of Reading

Linguaskill General Reading is practised in these parts, with the names Cambridge gives them. In the real exam the type of question changes as you answer; here each part has its own and goes up from B1 to C2:

  • Read and select. A notice, a label or a short email and one question: you choose the sentence that means the same.
  • Gapped sentences. A sentence with one gap: you choose the word or phrase that completes it.
  • Multiple-choice gap-fill. A text with five gaps: you choose the right word for each gap from several options.
  • Open gap-fill. A text with five gaps and no options: you type one word in each.
  • Extended reading. Long texts with several questions: comprehension, the missing sentence or paragraph, and matching texts.

The 40-minute Reading practice test

It brings together 44 questions from B1 to C2 in 40 minutes, the reference time for Linguaskill Reading. It is marked at the end and gives you the correct answers by level.

It is not an official score. Cambridge does not publish how many questions the module has, so the number of tasks is our own estimate, and the real exam is adaptive: it chooses the questions according to how you are doing, which a fixed test cannot reproduce. Here a level counts as held when you get 60% or more of its questions right.

To train your pace, use the timer: with 40 minutes and 44 questions you get a little over a minute per question.

Frequently asked questions about Reading practice

  • Is it free? Yes. You do not need to sign up or leave your email to practise.
  • Is what I answer saved? No. Everything is marked in your browser and, if you reload the page, you start from scratch.
  • Is it useful for Linguaskill Business? The format and timings are the same; only the context of the texts changes. Here the texts are from the General version.
  • What do I do if I do not reach B1 in the practice test? Start with parts 1 and 2, the shortest ones, and repeat the practice test when you do well in them.
