The questions come first and the answers at the end, like a paper test, so you do not see them by accident. If you were looking for a Linguaskill sample test PDF or practice material with answers, this is our own material, not a Cambridge PDF or one copied from other sites.

Two samples

Choose the word that completes the sentence.

I have been working here ___ 2019, and I still enjoy it.

  1. 1since
  2. 2for
  3. 3from
  4. 4during

With a specific starting point in time and the present perfect continuous, you use «since». «For» needs a length of time, like «for five years».

Read the email and choose the sentence that means the same.

Hi Marta, I have looked at the figures you sent. Before I sign anything off, I would like Ana to run through them once more.

  1. 1He has approved the figures.
  2. 2He wants Ana to check the figures before approving them.
  3. 3He thinks the figures Ana sent are wrong.

He says that before signing anything off he wants Ana to go through the figures. He has not approved anything yet, he does not say they are wrong, and Ana did not send them.

How to get the most out of the PDF

  1. 1

Print only the questions. The answers start on a separate page, so you can leave them in the printer tray until you finish.

  2. 2

Set a timer. The real reading module takes about 40 minutes, according to Cambridge. We would give these 22 questions about 30, so you get used to reading against the clock.

  3. 3

Mark it with the explanation, not just the letter. Each answer says why it is the right one. That is where you learn not to make the same mistake twice.

  4. 4

Note which task type you get wrong most often. If it is always the same one, practise it on the website, where there are more questions of each type and the answer appears straight away.

What each task type asks you to do

Read and select
A short text, such as a notice, an email or a label, with one question about what it means. It checks whether you get the main idea without reading word by word.
Gap fill with options
A sentence or text with one gap and several options. It is usually decided by vocabulary, or by the word that normally goes with another.
Open gap fill
A gap with no options where you write a single word. It is usually grammar, such as a preposition, an article or a pronoun.
Missing sentence
A text with a sentence or paragraph missing. You solve it by looking at what comes before and after the gap.
Matching texts
Several short texts, for example three plans A, B and C, and questions you match to one of them. It checks whether you can find the detail you are asked for.
Extended reading
A text of several paragraphs with multiple-choice questions. This is the task where you feel the clock most.

What paper cannot tell you

The PDF tells you how many you got right, but not what level you are. Linguaskill reports results on a scale from 140 to 210, which converts into a level from B1 to C2. The real test is also adaptive, so the next question depends on how you answer. Paper cannot do that. The free practice test on the website gives you an estimate of your level in about seven minutes.

Frequently asked questions

Is this PDF an official Cambridge test?

No. It is Linguaskill Academy’s own material with the task types of the Linguaskill reading module. Cambridge publishes its own samples on its website.

Is there a PDF for listening, writing or speaking?

For now, only for reading. Listening needs audio and writing and speaking need someone to mark them, so you practise those on the website, also for free.

How many questions are there in the Linguaskill reading module?

Cambridge does not publish a fixed number, because the test is adaptive and the questions depend on how you answer. What it does give is the length of the module, about 40 minutes.

Can I print it and share it?

Yes, it is free to use for study. If you share it, link to this page so whoever uses it always has the corrected version.
