Is Linguaskill accepted by your university or employer?

No single list says who accepts Linguaskill. This guide shows how to check your own university or employer, what to ask and how long a certificate stays valid.

Quick answer

Is Linguaskill accepted? It depends on the organisation that asks for it, not on Cambridge. The certificate has no expiry date, but each university or employer decides which test it takes and how recent it must be. Check Cambridge’s recognition database, then confirm in writing before you book. You can also practise the full test for free while you wait for the answer.

There is no global list that settles the question for every case. What works is a short check that costs nothing. This guide gives you the steps and the exact wording to ask.

Who decides whether Linguaskill is accepted?

The organisation that asks for your result decides. Cambridge describes Linguaskill as a ‘globally recognised’ exam on its Linguaskill page. On its results page it also says that organisations accepting it can choose how recently the test must have been taken (Cambridge English, accessed 25 October 2026).

In practice, the same certificate can be enough for one programme and refused by the next. The reasons are usually simple. One course wants a minimum CEFR level, another wants a named test and a third wants all four skills. Your result is only as useful as the rule it has to meet.

How do you check if your university or employer accepts Linguaskill?

Start with Cambridge’s recognition database, then confirm with the organisation itself. Cambridge publishes a search tool in the ‘Who accepts our exams?’ section where you can look for institutions that accept and use its exams. You can filter by location, city and institution type. The exam type list includes both Linguaskill and Linguaskill Business. The page itself warns that recognition status can change, so a listing is a starting point and not a promise.

  1. Search the database. Open Cambridge’s recognition page, filter by Linguaskill and type your institution’s name or its type.
  2. Read the requirement page. Look at the admissions, scholarship or job-application page for the exact wording on English tests and levels.
  3. Write to the organisation. Ask the questions listed below and keep the reply.
  4. Book only after the answer. Choose the version and the modules the organisation names.

If the database does not list your institution, that is not a refusal. It may only mean nobody has registered it there. Ask anyway.

What should you ask before booking?

Ask five things in writing. An email gives you a reply you can show later if someone at the desk disagrees.

  • Do you accept Linguaskill and which version, General or Business?
  • Which skills must the result include, or are Reading and Listening enough?
  • What is the minimum level or score, in CEFR terms or on the Cambridge English Scale?
  • How recent must the result be?
  • Do you want the certificate itself, or will a verification of the result do?

The fourth question matters most, because the organisation sets that limit and not Cambridge. For the scores themselves, our guide to reading your Linguaskill results explains the scale from B1 to C2.

Does a Linguaskill certificate expire?

No, the certificate itself has no expiry date. Cambridge states that there is no expiry date for a Linguaskill certificate (Cambridge English, Linguaskill results page, accessed 25 October 2026). That does not mean every organisation will accept an old one.

Each organisation sets its own time limit. One may want a recent result, another may set no limit at all. So the useful question is not ‘does it expire’ but ‘how old may my result be for this application’. If you are not sure when to sit the test, take it after you know the requirement, not before.

Can an organisation check that your certificate is real?

Yes, Cambridge offers a free online Results Verification Service. Cambridge’s ‘Accept and verify our exams’ page says organisations can use it to check the authenticity of a Cambridge English result quickly and securely (accessed 25 October 2026). On its results page Cambridge adds that a Linguaskill result can only be verified if you share it with the organisation’s verification account, which you do from the Metrica test portal. Our guide to the Linguaskill certificate explains what the document shows.

What if the answer is no?

Ask which test and level they would take instead. Some organisations accept several tests at the same CEFR level, others only name one. A refusal for one application does not change what your result means. It is still a Cambridge result on a published scale.

If the organisation names a different test, compare what it measures before you pay for it. And if you still plan to take Linguaskill for another purpose, practising the Reading module first costs nothing.

What recognition checks tell you

  • Whether an organisation lists or uses Linguaskill
  • Whether a result is genuine, through Cambridge’s verification service
  • No practice and no estimate of your level

What you can do for free with us

  • A full practice test with Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking in the order of the exam
  • A level on the CEFR scale at the end, so you know if you are near the requirement
  • Separate practice for each module

Our practice test does not replace the Cambridge certificate and gives no official score. It helps you see whether your level is close to the minimum an organisation asks for, so you do not book a test you are not ready for.

Is Linguaskill accepted everywhere?

No, acceptance is decided by each organisation. Cambridge calls the exam globally recognised, but a university, employer or ministry sets its own requirement. Check the recognition database and ask in writing.

How long is a Linguaskill certificate valid?

There is no expiry date on the certificate. The organisation that asks for it can choose how recent the test must have been taken, so ask for the limit in your case.

Is Linguaskill Business accepted as well as General?

It depends on what the organisation asks for. Cambridge’s recognition database lists Linguaskill and Linguaskill Business as separate exam types, so check the version named in the requirement.

Where can I find a list of accepted universities?

There is no single complete list. Use Cambridge’s recognition database filtered by Linguaskill and then confirm on the university’s own admissions page.
